Refactoring UI - Working with Images (Chapter 7)
This summary will serve to further cement my learnings taken when reading the seventh chapter of Refactoring UI
, titled Working with Images
, and I hope will provide some learnings to you as well.
Use of Good Photos
- The quality of photos significantly impacts design aesthetics.
- Options for non-professional photographers include hiring a professional or using high-quality stock photography.
Text Needs Consistent Contrast
- Background image dynamics can make text legibility challenging.
- Solutions include adding overlays, lowering image contrast, colorizing the image, or using text shadows.
Everything Has an Intended Size
- Scaling icons or screenshots improperly can lead to loss of detail and professionalism.
- Maintaining the intended size of icons and choosing appropriate screenshots prevents visual distortion.
Beware User-Uploaded Content
- User-uploaded images may disrupt layout and color harmony.
- Controlling shape and size, preventing background bleed, and using subtle inner shadows help maintain design integrity.
